From Amarillo to Dallas
Sun. 3/9/2025 by Richard Bothne

This morning began with an icy walk to the local dog park in Amarillo. At 30 degrees, the frost clung to everything, making the world seem like a wintry postcard. Lucky, as always, didn’t mind the chill or the fact that we had the park to ourselves. He dashed and explored with uncontainable enthusiasm, reminding me once again how joyful the simplest moments can be.

After our frozen adventure, we hit the road toward Dallas. The drive was long, accompanied by a steady parade of icy landscapes outside the window. Inside the car, we immersed ourselves in audiobooks, letting the stories transport us as the highway stretched on. It made the journey feel like an adventure within an adventure—a delightful escape from the monotony of the road.

The stark, frosty weather eventually gave
way to warmth as we approached Dallas. The city greeted us with 55-degree sunshine, a welcome change after the icy start. Eager to make the most of the pleasant weather, we decided on a spontaneous 20-minute bike ride with Lucky. With him trotting happily beside me, we wove through sunlit paths, the warm air a refreshing contrast to the freezing start of the day.

From the frosty dog park in Amarillo to the sunny bike ride in Dallas, today was a celebration of contrasts and simple joys. Lucky, as always, was at the center of it all, infusing every moment with his boundless energy and charm. Here’s to more days like this—filled with small adventures and unexpected sunshine!
First day in Dallas
Mon. 3/10/2025 by Richard Bothne

Today was our first day in Dallas, and it turned out to be a great mix of exploration and relaxation. The morning began with a long walk with Lucky, who seemed to love the fresh air and new surroundings. It was a peaceful way to ease into the day.

Later, we ventured downtown to explore the city. Our first stop was the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza—a poignant and fascinating experience that brought history to life. Afterward, we strolled around downtown, soaking in the sights. We admired the impressive Pioneer Plaza with its iconic bronze longhorn cattle drive sculptures, a true homage to Texas spirit, and then marveled at the quirky giant eye sculpture— it was both strange and captivating.
For lunch, we treated ourselves to a meal at Las Palmas Tex-Mex. The food was on the pricier side, but it didn’t disappoint. The flavors were spot-on, and the lively ambiance added to the experience.

Back at the Airbnb, we allowed ourselves a much-needed nap to recharge. The evening was calm and simple, ending with another walk with Lucky. He seemed content, and so were we. It was the perfect way to wrap up an eventful day. Afterward, it was off to bed, with thoughts of what adventures tomorrow might bring.
Dallas has already made quite an impression!
A Day in Fort Worth

Tue. 3/11/2025 by Richard Bothne

Today was one for the books! We kicked it off with a peaceful morning walk with Lucky. The fresh air and quiet energy set the tone for the day ahead. Lucky, as always, was full of excitement, exploring every nook and cranny.

Our next stop was the iconic Fort Worth Stockyards. We arrived just in time to watch the mesmerizing cattle drive—what a sight! Those longhorns never fail to impress. Afterward, we strolled through the charming shops, soaking in the historic vibes of the area. Every corner seemed to have its own unique treasures, and it was so much fun browsing through all the quaint boutiques.

Lunch was a treat in itself—a delicious burger at one of the Stockyards’ joints. It hit the spot after our wanderings. It’s always nice to refuel with something so hearty and satisfying.
In the afternoon, we headed to the Kimbell Art Museum, a true gem of Fort Worth. The art was stunning and inspiring, but the museum’s architecture was equally captivating. Meanwhile, Lucky snoozed peacefully in the car with the air conditioning keeping him nice and comfortable—a well-deserved nap for our little explorer.

After our museum visit, we made a quick trip to the Fort Worth Water Gardens. It was a delightful contrast—a modern urban oasis with cascading waterfalls and tranquil pools. We couldn’t resist exploring the dramatic Active Pool and taking in the soothing ambiance of the Quiet Pool. The gardens provided a refreshing pause in our otherwise bustling day, a perfect blend of nature and cityscape.

As the day wound down, we ventured downtown for dinner. The patio setting was perfect—great food, a laid-back vibe, and Lucky right there with us, hanging out and adding his own charm to the evening. It was the perfect way to wrap up a day packed with culture, history, and good company.
Looking back, it was a day full of simple joys, memorable moments, and, of course, Lucky’s cheerful presence every step of the way. Fort Worth never disappoints!
Dallas to San Antonio Adventure
Wed. 3/12/2025 by Richard Bothne

Today was packed with excitement and unexpected encounters! The day began early with a refreshing bike ride alongside Lucky. The cool morning air was invigorating, and Lucky seemed especially happy, tail wagging furiously as we pedaled through the peaceful streets.
Once we got back home, it was time to pack up and hit the road. Our first stop was during a charging break, which turned out to be far more eventful than anticipated. Lucky somehow stumbled upon Sasquatch (or at least something suspiciously resembling him) and, to top it off, a group of baby burros! These little guys were adorable yet surprisingly assertive—especially when Lucky decided to test his freedom and dashed off, getting himself promptly chased by the burros. Watching the scene unfold was both chaotic and hilarious, though we were relieved when Lucky safely returned, a bit humbled by his run-in.
Back on the road, I decided to stretch my limits with a visit to the Trinity Forest Adventure Park while Grace and Lucky stayed behind to explore the surrounding area. The park was an exhilarating challenge! I tackled the aerial obstacle courses, swinging and climbing through treetops with determination. The zip lines offered a thrilling rush as I soared through the greenery—it was an unforgettable, pulse-raising experience that left me with a real sense of accomplishment. Sorry no pictures for this. My phone was locked away so it didn’t get smashed.
Feeling ravenous, we reconvened and stopped for lunch at the Collin Street Bakery & Café. Their delicious sandwiches and famous desserts gave us the perfect boost for the remainder of our journey. Lucky, still recovering from his earlier escapade, lounged contentedly while we indulged.
Finally, we reached San Antonio and settled into our cozy Airbnb. The charm of the place set the perfect tone for the adventures awaiting us in this vibrant city.
Reflecting on the day, it’s clear this journey is off to an unforgettable start. Here’s to more surprises, laughter, and memories yet to be made!
A Day in San Antonio
Thu. 3/13/2025 by Richard Bothne

This morning began with a serene stroll along the River Walk with Lucky, our faithful companion. The early light glimmered off the water, and the gentle sounds of the flowing river set the perfect tone for the day. Lucky, of course, was thrilled to lead the way, his tail wagging with every step.

From there, we ventured to the historic Alamo. Walking among its storied walls was like stepping back in time. The atmosphere was rich with the echoes of history, a reminder of the sacrifices and resilience that shaped this place. It was humbling and awe-inspiring all at once.

Our day continued with another walk along the downtown stretch of the River Walk. The bustling energy of the area was invigorating, with the vibrant mix of tourists, locals, and street performers adding to the charm.

For lunch, we stopped at Casa Rio, the oldest restaurant on the River Walk, which has been serving Tex-Mex delights since 1946. Dining by the water, we enjoyed the cozy and historic atmosphere, savoring the flavors of the past. The meal was delightful and definitely worth the visit.

After completing our leisurely stroll, we returned to the Airbnb for a much-needed nap. Post-nap, Grace enjoyed leftovers from last night’s dinner, while I indulged in
Popeye’s chicken yet again. A satisfying and simple end to the day.

Tomorrow, we’re off to Houston for new adventures!
San Antonio To Houston
Fri. 3/14/2025 by Richard Bothne

What a day it has been! It began with an early morning bike ride along the river with Lucky, a perfect start to our journey. As we pedaled, we found ourselves riding through a swarm of gnats, and it was so dense that it felt almost like riding through rain! Lucky didn’t seem to mind one bit—his wagging tail said it all.

After our ride, we hit the road to Houston. The drive itself was pleasant, with stretches of scenic landscapes that seemed to blur into a perfect blend of road-trip nostalgia. As we approached Houston, the anticipation of visiting the legendary Space
Center built up.
The Houston Space Center was nothing short of spectacular—a portal to the stars and beyond! From the life-sized rocket exhibits to the interactive simulations, we were immersed in the marvels of space exploration. Standing in the shadow of the Saturn V rocket was humbling; it was a reminder of humanity’s boundless curiosity and determination. Every corner of the center had something that sparked awe and wonder.

After an exciting day, we were ready to unwind and settle in for the night, but plans took an unexpected turn—our Airbnb booking was canceled at the last minute! This threw us into a spontaneous search for a hotel. Thankfully, we managed to find a cozy place to stay before finally getting some rest. It was a small hiccup in an otherwise smooth day, and now we’re gearing up to head east tomorrow, ready for the next chapter of our journey.
From Houston To Lafayette
Sat. 3/15/2025 by Richard Bothne

What a journey today has been! We started our trip from the bustling city of Houston, excited to explore a new destination. The road was kind to us, offering scenic views and moments of quiet reflection as we headed east toward Lafayette.

Our first stop was LARC’s Acadian Village, a true hidden gem. Walking through the historic buildings, we felt transported back in time to the 19th century, immersed in the rich Acadian culture. The quaint charm of the village, with its rustic homes and serene surroundings, made for a peaceful and enlightening break in our journey. It was fascinating to witness the preservation of such an important piece of history.

By the time we reached Lafayette, we were ready to settle in. The AirBnB was cozy and welcoming, the perfect base for our adventure. After getting settled, we ventured downtown for dinner. The Flats restaurant did not disappoint—it was a delightful culinary experience with delicious food and a warm atmosphere.
Downtown Lafayette was alive with energy tonight, as the city celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day a little early. The streets were buzzing with music, laughter, and a sea of green-clad revelers. We couldn’t help but get swept up in the festive spirit. It was a whirlwind of fun and excitement, a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Lafayette to New Orleans
Sun. 3/16/2025 by Richard Bothne

Today was filled with adventure and moments to remember. The day began in Lafayette with a peaceful bike ride around the hotel area. Lucky trotted alongside, full of energy, as we explored the early morning quiet—a perfect start to our journey. Before hitting the road, we stopped at Vermilionville, a historical treasure showcasing the Acadian, Creole, and Native American cultures of the region. Wandering through the village felt like stepping back in time, and it offered us a deeper appreciation for the stories and lives that shaped Louisiana’s unique heritage.
The drive to New Orleans was smooth and filled with anticipation. When we arrived, we settled into our charming Airbnb and prepared for an evening in the heart of the French Quarter. Dinner was a feast of flavors at Bon’s Street Food, where every bite was a celebration of local cuisine. Afterward, we strolled through the vibrant chaos of Bourbon Street, soaking in the sights, sounds, and energy of the city that never seems to sleep.
No visit to New Orleans would be complete without a stop at Café Du Monde. Open since 1862, it’s a true icon. The warm, powdered-sugar-covered beignets melted in our mouths, paired with hot chocolate for me and decaf coffee for Grace—pure bliss.
As the night deepened, we returned to our Airbnb, full of gratitude for the experiences of the day and excitement for what tomorrow might bring in this incredible city. New Orleans, we’ve just begun!
Our First Full Day in New Orleans
Mon. 3/17/2025 by Richard Bothne

Today was nothing short of an adventure! We started the morning bright and early with a peaceful walk alongside Lucky. The cool breeze and quiet streets of New Orleans set a wonderful tone for the day ahead. Lucky seemed especially chipper, which added an extra spring to our steps.

Our first outing took us to the Laura Plantation, where history seemed to come alive amidst the vivid stories of its Creole heritage. The colorful architecture and the captivating tour gave us a glimpse into a world gone by. From there, we visited the Destrehan Plantation, which offered another perspective on Louisiana’s rich past. Both sites were fascinating, though the contrast between them added layers to our understanding of the region’s complex history.

Lunch, unfortunately, was less memorable—bland and rather unremarkable. But it served its purpose, giving us a much-needed energy boost for the rest of the day.
Back in New Orleans, we wandered along Canal Street, soaking in the hustle and bustle of this vibrant city. The highlight, though, was taking the ferry across the Mississippi River to Algiers. The view of the city skyline from the water was spectacular and gave us a fresh appreciation for New Orleans. Algiers itself was charming, though our visit was brief before heading back.
For dinner, we kept it simple—a pizza from a spot near our Airbnb. Maybe it was the long day catching up to us, but that pizza hit the spot. Satisfied and content, we wrapped up the day, settling into bed with a sense of fulfillment.

Today was a mix of history, exploration, and quiet moments. It feels like we’re beginning to uncover the spirit of New Orleans, one layer at a time. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring!
2nd Full Day in New Orleans
Tue. 3/18/2025 by Richard Bothne

Today was a day filled with walking, exploring, and a touch of history and adventure.
We started the morning with a long, peaceful walk with Lucky. New Orleans in the early hours has a special kind of magic—quiet yet alive in its own way. Lucky seemed to enjoy every moment, his tail wagging with excitement as we strolled along, soaking in the sights and sounds.

Next, we joined a walking tour of the Garden District, which lasted about two hours. The area was absolutely enchanting, with its historic mansions, iron balconies, and lush gardens. Each house seemed to tell a story, and the guide’s insights into the architecture and history made it all the more captivating. It was easy to lose track of time as we wandered through this beautiful neighborhood.

For lunch, we headed to Stein’s Deli—a cozy spot that lived up to its reputation. The sandwiches were incredible, and it was a much-needed break after all that walking. It felt good to sit back, refuel, and just enjoy the local vibe.

After lunch, we visited Metairie Cemetery, which was both serene and fascinating. The mausoleums and monuments were works of art in their own right, and walking through the cemetery felt like stepping back in time. It was a poignant reminder of the city’s rich and layered history.

Later in the day, we decided to take a drive across the Causeway. The vast stretch over Lake Pontchartrain was a unique experience, offering stunning views and a sense of calm as we drove back and forth. It was a perfect way to wind down after a busy afternoon.
We wrapped up the day with dinner at Popeye’s Chicken—a fittingly casual and satisfying end to our adventures. The spicy fried chicken was delicious, and it was nice to just relax back at our Airbnb, reflecting on the day’s explorations.
New Orleans continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I’m already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring!

Today was a day of transition and music. I started with a refreshing short walk with
Lucky in the morning, enjoying the quiet before our early departure from New Orleans. The drive to Memphis was long and uneventful, but we were excited for our destination. After about eight hours on the road, with a few necessary charging stops, we finally arrived in Memphis and checked into our cozy Airbnb.

In the evening, we headed to Beale Street, the heart of Memphis’ vibrant music scene.

We had dinner at B.B. King’s Blues Club, where the atmosphere was lively and the food was delicious. The live blues performance was mesmerizing, with talented musicians filling the air with soulful melodies.

After a fulfilling night of music and good company, we settled back into our Airbnb, ready to explore more of Memphis tomorrow.

From Nashville to Atlanta

Sun. 3/23/2025 by Richard Bothne

Today was a day of exploration, transition, and moments that will stick with us as we traveled from Nashville to Atlanta.
Lucky’s Long Walk The morning began with Lucky’s long walk. The quietness of the surroundings was calming, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and Lucky’s paws pattering against the ground. Lucky embraced the fresh air with boundless enthusiasm, exploring every inch of the trail without distraction. It was refreshing to spend time outdoors, just the three of us, soaking in the solitude before hitting the road.
Our First Breakfast at the Waffle House Soon after, we stopped for breakfast at a Waffle House—a first for us. It was simplicity at its best: golden waffles that melted in our mouths, crispy bacon, and coffee that warmed us up from the inside out. The diner had its own charm, with a low hum of activity and the comforting clatter of cooking filling the air. It was just the kind of hearty meal to fuel our day ahead.
The Lodge Cast Iron Museum and Store An unexpected detour brought us to the Lodge Cast Iron Museum and store. Walking through the exhibits, we marveled at the craftsmanship of cast iron through the ages. The history and innovation on display were fascinating. While we resisted the temptation to buy anything, the visit left us appreciating the artistry of these everyday tools in a whole new way.

Settling Down in Our Airbnb in Atlanta By evening, we finally arrived in Atlanta and checked into our Airbnb. While it wasn’t charming, the space had a well-worn feel—a place with character, showing signs of countless guests who’d made it a stop in their own journeys. We settled in, made ourselves comfortable, and began planning the adventures for the days ahead. Lucky quickly claimed his spot, lying contentedly in a corner. It was clear that, although well-used, this Airbnb would be our base for new memories.
Looking back, the journey was filled with moments that added depth to the day:
from quiet reflection on Lucky’s walk to unexpected discoveries at the museum.
Here’s to embracing the road and whatever it brings next.
