A Day at the Charles River Esplanade with Lucky

Today was all about fresh air, river views, and time with our favorite four-legged companion, Lucky. We hopped on the subway from Chelsea and made our way into Boston with Lucky in tow—he’s becoming quite the pro at public transportation!

We started off with a stroll down Newbury Street. Even though we didn’t go into the shops (having a dog with you will do that!), it was still fun to walk the length of the street, admire the historic brownstones, people-watch from the wide sidewalks, and soak up the lively summer energy. Lucky especially enjoyed sniffing his way past cafes and boutiques, tail wagging the whole time.

Afterward, we made our way over to the Charles River Esplanade, one of the most beautiful green spaces in the city. It’s amazing how quickly the vibe changes once you get near the water—calmer, quieter, with sailboats drifting by and joggers and cyclists passing on the paths. We followed the footbridge over Storrow Drive and let Lucky lead the way along the river path.

We found a shady spot near the docks where Lucky could lounge in the grass while we enjoyed the view of Cambridge across the river. Rowers slid silently past in long boats, and the breeze coming off the water was a welcome relief from the summer heat. There were kids playing, dogs running, and families out for picnics—it felt like classic Boston in July.

Eventually, we circled back through the Esplanade paths and made our way back toward the T. Lucky got lots of attention from passersby—he always does—and was totally content on the subway ride home, tired from the walk and the excitement of the day.

It was a simple outing, but one of those peaceful, satisfying Boston days. The Charles River Esplanade is definitely a favorite—and Lucky would agree.
