A Day in Hudson and Olana

We set out for a day trip from Albany, heading south to explore Hudson, NY and Olana, the historic home of artist Frederic Edwin Church.

Hudson welcomed us with its charming main street, lined with boutique shops, galleries, and old brick buildings full of character. We strolled along at an easy pace, enjoying the mix of antique storefronts and modern touches that make Hudson feel both historic and alive. For lunch, we found a cozy Mexican restaurant right in town and settled in for a delicious meal. It was a perfect way to recharge before heading to our next destination.

From Hudson, we drove just a short distance to Olana, perched high on a hill overlooking the Hudson River. The estate, once home to landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, is as much a work of art as the paintings he created. Grace joined a guided tour of the house, taking in its unique architecture, Persian-inspired design, and rooms filled with art and history.

Meanwhile, I took Lucky for a long walk along the grounds. The trails wound through meadows and woodlands, opening up to sweeping views of the river and Catskills beyond. The hour passed quickly, with Lucky happily leading the way and both of us enjoying the peacefulness of the estate.

As the afternoon wound down, we reunited and made our way back to Albany. It was a well-rounded day—art, history, nature, and a bit of small-town charm—all within an easy drive from our Airbnb.
